Abstract

367,233. Cigarette-making machines. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(American Machine & Foundry Co. ; 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) April 11, 1931, No. 10744. [Class 130.] To compensate for wear of the knife in a cutting mechanism for a continuous rod cigarette-making machine in which the knife is carried by a slide movable in a carrier which is rotatable about an axis inclined to the cigarette rod, (a) the slide is radially adjusted by two screw shafts oppositely threaded at one end into the slide and carrying at their other end gear wheels which mesh with a wheel on a manually rotatable shaft, (b) the cutting knife supported on the slide is driven by rotation of the carrier through a fixed wheel and toothed gearing which includes relatively sliding parts to permit a radial adjustment of the slide, and (c) the knife blade is perforated to engage pins on the supporting slide and is secured by a yielding clamp to permit adjustment of the blade. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, a knife 58 which rotates on its own axis is secured to an adjustable slide 60 mounted in a rotating carrier 59, the knife being geared to the carrier through a fixed annular wheel 68 and gear wheels 67, 65, 64. The wheel 65 is free to slide on a shaft 66 to allow the knife to be rotated when the slide 60 is adjusted by right and left hand screws 70 which carry gear wheels 71, 72 in mesh with a gear wheel 73 on a manually rotatable shaft 74. The wheels act as a locking device and prevent radial movement of the slide 60 due to centrifugal force. To facilitate the adjustment of the knife, it is rotated manually from a wheel 87 through gearing 89, 55, 56 which rotates a shaft 57 on which the carrier 59 is mounted. The gear wheels 89, 55 can be moved out of engagement by an eccentrically mounted lever 91. The carrier 59 is driven through gear wheels 56, 55 from an inclined shaft 29 which through gearing 35, 36 also drives a shaft 37. An eccentrically mounted balance weight 40 on the shaft 37 acting through a crank pin 41 and rod 42 reciprocates a slide 44 which carries the ledger plate 50 that supports the cigarette rod C to be severed. The shaft 29 is driven from a main shaft through gearing 15, 16, 27, 28. Lubricating oil is forced by a gear pump 21, 22 through a pipe 26 to the top of the cutting mechanism. A grinding wheel 76, for renewing the edge of the cutting knife, is mounted in an adjustable bracket 78, the position of which is determined by a screw 84. An adjustable dressing-wheel 85 is provided to remove burrs from the knife blade after grinding. In the modified construction shown in Fig. 8, radial adjustment of the slide is permitted by driving the knife 102 through a stationary wheel 114, a train of wheels 111, 109, 108 in sliding engagement and wheels 106, 105. In a further modified construction shown in Fig. 9, a wafer blade 116 is clamped to the carrier 115 by screws 118. The blade is inclined to the plane of rotation of the carrier 115 so that it is perpendicular to the cigarette rod during cutting. To adjust the blade radially, it is provided with two holes into which are fitted pins 120 projecting into aligned slots in the carrier 115, and the pins are mounted on a slide 121 which is adjusted by the hand-screw 127. The different forms of carrier are interchangeable.
