CIGARETTE MACHINE.

This invention relates to improvements in a cigarette-rod device combined with a knifesharpening device. which consists of sharpening rollers which are rotatable about spindles which are adjustable but wlnch remain immovable during working. Thls arrangement of the sharpening rollers is qu te eas ly possible in conjunction with a circular knite rotating about its own axis and also rotating about the axis of a knife carrier in planet like manner and, on account of the rotation of the revolving knife about its own axus, causing every point of the circular knife edge to reach the same position in relation to the sharpening roller. This obviates the constructional conditions which are given 1n the case of a so-called sickle or crescent-shaped knife with its cutting edge projecting like a cam.
Furthermore the driving of the circular knife by the aid of a crossed belt is obviated, two further cord pulleys being arranged as guide rollers on the supporting body of the knife pivot besides the cord pulley on the knife'pivot, in such a way that the cord passing over these guide rollers forms a loop when it runs over the cord pulley that drives the knife pivot. The supporting body of the knife pivot is structurally separate from the so vibrating rotating carrier, and is so arranged as to be radially displaceable thereon, so that the adjustment can be effected in accordance with the various sizes of knives. The cord must also be lengthened or shortened to correspond to this adjustment, this being effected by a corresponding adjustment of the two above-mentioned guide rollers, which are displaceably arranged on the supporting body of the pivot of the circular knife.
For the further elucidation of the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a plan of the cutting and sharpening device,

supported in a supporting body 3 oi the carrier 4. The carrier 4 is arranged upon a shaft 5 in such a way that during its rotation it executes a vibrating or wabbling movement. In order to enable the carrier to be conveniently adjusted, the end shaft 5 is constructed as a forked arm 5'. i'ork there projects a bearing eye 4/ arranged on the rear wall part of the carrier 4. The bearing eye surrounds a pivot bolt 5 which is carried by the ends of the forked arm 5. Thereby the knife carrier may be fixed in desired position by means of positioning screws 4 carried by arms arranged one on each side oi the forked arm 5 and mounted on the rear wall of carrier 4. The ends of these screws upon being adjusted bear against the fork 5. Hence in this matter any desired oblique position of the knife carrier 1- and consequent vibrating or wabbling movement of said carrier is brought about upon rotation of shaft 5. The supporting body 3 is radially adjustable on the carrier 4, the fastening screws 6 passing through corresponding slots 7 in the supporting body.
Upon the pivot '2 of the circular knife is mounted a cord pulley 8, while two further cord pulleys 9 and 10, on pivots 11 and 12 respectively, are also arranged on the carrier 3, one on each side of the cord. pulley 8. These pivots 11 and 12 pass through slots 13 in the supporting body 3, these slots being curved concentrically in relation to the pivot 2. Hence the cord rollers 9 and 10 can be adjusted on the supporting body 3. Over these rollers 9 and 10 is passed a cord 14, which is indicated in Figures 3 and 4c partly by full and partly by dotted lines.
The cord also runs over the cord roller 8 on the knife pivot 2, in such a way that between the two rollers 9 and 10 it describes a loop, the sag of which is determined by the adjustment of the rollers 9 and 10. The driving cord 14 is on the other hand passed over a cord pulley 15, which is immovably secured to a special holder 15, with any usual well known means, such as bolts 15, in such a manner that the cord pulley 15 ooaxially encircles the shaft 5 of the vibrating disc 4. The vibrating disc revolves in the direction of the arrows in Figures 3 and 4.
Into the Theeircular knife 1 must revolve in the same direction, this result being obtained without crossing the cord 14, by means of the 1nterposed guide rollers 9 and 10. Thus in the event of an adjustment of the supporting body 3, the regulating of the cord tension, or in other words the shortening or lengthening of the cord elements can take place without difliculty by the concentric adjustment of the pivots 11 and 12 of the guide rollers 9 and 10.
The cord pulley 15 does not participate in the vibrating movement of the knife carrier 4. In general, by the suggested guiding of the cord 14 over the rollers 9 and 10, a sufficiently good and reliable bearing of the driving cord is obtained. In case of need, however, the cord pulleys or their pivots may be so arranged as to be axially adjustable or slidable on the supporting body, 3, to enable them to be adjusted as required.
The grinding disc 16 serves for the grinding of the circular knife 1. Its spindle 17 is supported in a freely rotatable manner in a bearing block 18, the base plate 19 of which rests upon the horizontal table plate of a slide 20. The fastening to the slide can be effected by the aid of concentric slots 19' in the base plate 19, in such a way that after loosening the screws, the bolts of which pass through the slots 19 a certain rotation of the bearing 18 can take place. The slide 20 is on the other hand shifted by the aid of a screw-threaded spindle 21 and a hand wheel 22, the displacement being towards the carrier standard 28 in a direction transverse to the plane of the circular knife, that is, parallel to the axis of the pivot 2 of the circular knife 1 The shifting may be done while the sharpener is in operation, so as to keep the circular knife sharp at all times.
After the adjustment of the sharpening roller 16 has been effected, the sharpening roller remains stationary in its position, so that it does not move relatively to the circular knife blade but only executes a rotation about its own axis 17.
A second sharpening roller 24 serves in a known manner as a sharpening or smoothing roller for the purpose of removing the burr or fins that may have been produced during the grinding of the facet of the cutting edge of the circular knife. This roller also is supported with its spindle 25 freel rotatable in the supporting body 26, which is secured by a screw 27 to the slide 28. This slide is displaceable in a guide 29, transversely to the plane of the circular knife 1. The displacement is effected by the aid of a screw-threaded spindle 30 and a hand wheel 31. The shifting may be done whlle the sharpener is in operation, so as to keep the circular knife sharp at all times.
A hearing 29 is secured upon a casing 32, which contains the drive for the knife-carrier shaft 5.
What I claim is l. A cigarette rod cutting device and knife sharpening device for cigarette machines, comprising a rotatable shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a knife carrier secured obliquely to said shaft so as to rotate with it and at the same time to execute a vibratory movement, a circular knife mounted on said knife carrier, rotatably mounted sharpening rollers, means for adjusting the positions of the axes of said sharpening r llers when not in operation, and means for displacing said sharpening rollers at will in an axial direction While they are in operation, so as to keep the circular knife sharp at all times.
2. A cigarette rod cutting device and knife sharpening device for ci arette machines, comprising a rotatable s aft, means for rotating said shaft, a knife carrier secured obliquely to said shaft so as to rotate With it and at the same time to execute a vibratory movement, a circular knife mounted on said knife carrier, means for rotating said circular knife about its own axis, rotatably mounted sharpening rollers, means for adjusting the ositions of the axes of said sharpening r0 lers when not in operation, and means for displacing said sharpening rollers at will in an axial direction while they are in operation, so as to keep the circular knife sharp at all times.

A cigarette rod cutting device for ci arette machines, comprisin a rotatab e shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a knife carrier secured obliquely to said shaft so as to rotate with it and at the same time to execute a vibratory movement, a circular knife mounted on said knife carrier, a pulley secured to the pivot of said circular knife, a stationary pulley mounted with its axis in alignment with that of the knife carrier shaft, an endless driving band passing round said pulleys, means for adjusting the distance between the axes of sald pulleys, guide pulleys round which said endless driving band passes, said guide pulleys being so placed that the pulley secured to the circular knife bears externally against a reentrant part of the driving hand, between said guide pulleys, and means for adjusting the positions of the axes of said guide y pulleys.
4. A cigarette rod cut-ting device and knife sharpening device for cigarette machines, comprising a rotatable shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a knife carrier secured obliquely to said shaft so as to rotate with it and at the same time to execute a vibratory movement, a circular knife mounted on said knife carrier, a pulley secured to the pivot of said circular knife, a stationary pulley mounted with its axis in alignment with that of the knife carrier shaft, an endless driving band passing round said pulleys, means for adjusting the distance hetween the axes of said pulleys, uide pulleys round which said endless driving hand passes, said guide pulleys bein so placed that the pulley secured to the circular knife bears externally against a re-entrant part of the driving hand, between said guide pulleys, means for adjustin the positions of the axes of said guide pul eys, rotatably mounted sharpening rollers, means for adjusting the positions of the axes of said sharpening rollers when not in operation, and" means for displacing said sharpening rollers in an axial direction while the are in operation, so as to keep the circular nife sharp at all times.
5. A cigarette rod cutting device for eigarette machines, com risin a cutter carrying means secured o lique y to a rotatable shaft whereby said means executes a vibra tion movement upon rotation of said shaft, cutting means mounted on said carrying means, a pulley secured to the same mount ing means as said cutting means, a stati0nary pulley mounted with its axis in alignment with that of said shaft, means for adjusting the distance between the axes of said pulleys, an endless driving band for said pulleys, guide ulleys, round which said endless driving and asses, said guide pulleys being so placed t at the pulley secured to the cutting means bears externally against a re-entrant part of the driving band between said gulde ulleys.
