Abstract
445,464. Cathode-ray tubes. FERRANTI, Ltd., and TAYLOR, M. K., Hollinwood, Lancashire. Sept. 6, 1934, No. 25664. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] A double-ended , tube for television has a single screen c intercepting cathode rays which are emitted from two sources a at opposite ends of the tube and which are controlled by devices b. The screen c may be inclined to the axis of the tube as shown for viewing normally, or may be normal to the axis and viewed obliquely. In the dual scanning of the screen by the two rays, the spots may coincide to brighten the image or may be out of phase to produce interlaced lines and so reduce flicker, and one ray may be displaced relatively to the other by a magnetic bias. An elastic screen such as a mica sheet may be rolled up and inserted through either end of the tube : the screen is of diameter corresponding to the enlarged central part of the tube and springs into plane form inside the tube. The screen is coated on both sides with fluorescent material before or after insertion into the tube or is of bi-refringent material such as mica stressed by electrostatic charges set up by the rays and modulating polarized light passed through the screen. Distortion due to departure of the screen from planar form may be corrected by the viewing lens. Specification 423,696 is referred to.
