Abstract

448,146. Cathode - ray tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and JESTY, L. C., c/o General Electric Co., Ltd., Wembley, Middlesex. May 17, 1935, No. 14535. [Class 39 (i)] " Keystone distortion " of the image due to the inclination of the screen 4 of a cathoderay tube for television &c. is compensated by an opposed " keystone distortion " which is produced by the varying mean potential of the deflecting plates 3 nearer the screen 4 and which is adjusted in magnitude by a conductor 5 between the plates 3 and the screen 4 and at a potential varying in the same sense as that of the plates 3. The plates 3 produce the deflections at low frequency and the high frequency deflections are produced by plates 2 or magnetic coils. One plate 3 is at fixed potential and the other plate 3 receives the scanning voltages. As the mean potential of the plates 3 varies, the ray deflected at the plates 2 is variably refracted to produce a " keystone distortion opposed to the distortion due to the inclined screen 4. The magnitude of the former distortion is adjusted to compensate adequately for the latter distortion by means of the ring 5 of suitable length parallel to the axis 1 of the tube and connected to the plate 3 of varying potential or to a tapping on a potentiometer across the plates 3. Several rings 5 .. 7 may be arranged between the plates 3 and screen 4 and suitably connected to the plates 3. Specification 412,813 is referred to.
