Abstract

729,685. Colour television tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 7. 1953 [April 10, 1952], No. 9394/53. Class 39 (1), [Also in Group XL (b)] In a colour television system in which the receiving cathode-ray tube screen is comprised of a repeating series of red, green and blue strips scanned in the direction of the strips, the cathode-ray beam is arranged to exhibit astigmatism whereby, with a change in the tube focus, the spot on the tube screen may be arranged to change in shape as shown at 10, 11 and 12 in Fig. 2. With the spot as shown at 10 three colour strips are embraced and white is produced. With the spot as shown at 12 only one strip is covered and a fully saturated colour is produced. With intermediate shapes of spot, such as 11, varying degrees of saturation are produced. The system operates with signals conveying information of image brightness, degree of saturation and colour which are applied respectively to the tube modulator, focus coil and an auxiliary frame deflection coil employed to position the scan on the correct coloured strips. As an alternative, the colour signal may be combined with the sawtooth in the normal frame deflection coils. The astigmatism may be produced: (1) by energizing the line or frame deflection coils in parallel with deflection current and in series with direct current, Fig. 5 (not shown); (2) by a flattened or elliptical shaped coil energized with direct current and disposed around the tube between the focus coil and screen, Fig. 4 (not shown); (3) by an electron-optical system comprising a tubular electrode of elliptical section; or (4) by maintaining the mean potential of deflecting plates (when electrostatic deflection is employed) different from the voltage of the final anode. To prevent variations in the beam current causing variations in focus, a voltage derived from the brightness signal may be applied as a converting voltage to the focus coil.
