Abstract

A scroop effect is produced on natural or artificial silk fabrics by depositing thereon a salt of acid reaction containing an alkali metal, a metal forming an amphoteric oxide such as titanium, tungsten, molybdenum, aluminium or tin, and a polybasic organic acid radicle; or alternatively an imide of a polybasic organic acid; or alternatively a bicarbonate of an alkali metal. Particular scrooping agents mentioned are potassium titanium oxalate, phthalimide and sodium and potassium bicarbonates. The scrooping agent is applied by immersing the fabric in or by passage through a solution of the agent, removing excess liquid so that the materials retain an amount of solution equal to one half or twice their weight, followed by drying. Fabrics dyed with amino-anthraquinone dyestuffs show an improved permanence when scrooped with the above agents. Specification 332,187, [Class 2 (ii)], is referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of acid salts, particularly alkali or alkaline earth salts, of polybasic acids, particularly polybasic aliphatic acids.
