Abstract

539,590. Surface treatment of aluminium and its alloys. BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO., Ltd., and PULLEN, A. N. D. March 16, 1940, No. 4944. [Class 41] The outer soft " smudge film formed on aluminium or its alloys, e.g. in electrolytic brightening as disclosed in Specification 449,162 is removed without using strong alkalies or solvents and without friction or rubbing methods, as by immersion in a solution such that the film peels off in small flakes, e.g. one containing sulphuric or other strong mineral acid, or oxalic acid &c. aluminium sulphate or other soluble aluminium salt, sodium or other fluoride &c. and gelatine, dextrine, pyridine, or quinoline &c. e.g. for 2-20 minutes. The treatment may be preceded by washing, and immersion in distilled water at 80‹ C. for 10 minutes.
