[Class 100 (i)] [See also Group XII] A spill maker comprises a web or band e running over rollers a ... d and including oppositely travelling flights f, g in close proximity between which the spill is formed. The driving roller a with its handle a<1>, and rollers c, d, are mounted in side walls i of a frame k, and the upper roller b is mounted in a carrier comprising arms j<1> pivotal on a rod kl. The upper roller is raised by means of a handle k<2> for inserting paper to be rolled, against the action of springs n attached to the axles of rollers a, d, the springs tending to draw back the axle of roller d in slots m to keep the band taut but allowing the carrier to rise as the diameter of the paper roll increases. Arms p pivoted on rod k<1> have depending teeth q for keeping the paper in position. A starting roll may be formed or applied at a corner of a paper sheet by the use of a slotted taper, a wooden splint secured to the paper by a strip of adhesive paper, or a curled piece of wax paper. Presser rolls h, h<1> are mounted in the frame and carrier along the operative portion of band.
