J. ; 6, Maubachstrasse, Kladow, Berlin) Sept. 14, 1935, No. 25561. Convention date, Sept. 15, 1934. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure metal vapour lamp having activated thermionic electrodes heated solely by the discharge has an electrode comprising an activated part and an unactivated refractory metal part extending beyond the first part in the direction of the discharge, and the parts are so shaped and arranged that the discharge initially terminates on the first part but later transfers itself to the second part. In one form, the electrode comprises a plurality of nested nickel wire mesh cups, fitting in a sheet-metal cup, having frayed edges and coated with barium oxide, and the support rod of tungsten is extended through the cups and terminates in a tungsten sphere. In a modification, a close-wound tapering tungsten helix is closed at the bottom by a flat spiral portion and the lower part contains activating material. The end of the helix serves as the support.
