Abstract

Filaments, attaching; filaments, supports for.- A coiled filament is supported at several points around one or more of its end convolutions, or continuously over a relatively large portion of those convolutions. As shown in Fig. 1, a support 2 of molybdenum or nickel, secured to a lead-in wire 3, has radial arms 4 bent around the end convolution, which may be bent slightly so as to lie in a plane at right angles to the axis of the helix 1. The support may be of thin material strengthened by a washer, and may be in the form of a triangular plate, the corners of which are bent around the filament. In a modification the support consists of three conically splayed strips. As shown in Fig. 4, a short tube 7, of a diameter equal to or slightly larger than the internal diameter of the helix 1, has a flange 8 retaining one or more of the end convolutions. Tongues may be provided on the flange and may be bent to secure the filament. The end convolutions may be of smaller pitch than the rest of the helix.
