Vacuum tubes. - In filaments of thermionic valves &c. which are formed from flat ribbon or strip, microphonic noises due to the vibration of the filament are prevented by giving the ribbon. a partial twist, or a number of turns, so that it assumes a helical form. The strip is passed axially through the grid, attached at the lower end to the lead-in wire, twisted through two complete turns and its upper end welded to the usual spring arm or support. In place of a flat strip, a ribbon of any non-circular cross section having unequal axes may be employed.
