Abstract

948,859. Electric incandescent lamps. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 26, 1962, No. 16070/62. Heading H1F. In the manufacture of lamps having a filament within a quartz or other vitreous envelope and at least one support wire attached to the filament intermediate its ends, the support wire is attached to the filament and the filament and wire inserted in the envelope with one end of the wire disposed in a tube extending from the envelope wall, the tube being sealed off so as to enclose the end of the wire. In a tubular lamp having a coiled coil filament 12 supported at its ends by solid wire plugs and molybdenum strips, the support wire 16 is attached to the filament so that its opposite end projects a little way into the exhaust tube and when this is tipped off the end of the wire 16 is sealed into the remains of the tube. To ensure accurate location of the filament the opposite end of the wire 16 may butt against the opposite wall of the envelope. Where a plurality of support wires are required, each of these may be associated with and sealed into an appendage similar to an exhaust tube. The invention is applicable to tungsten-iodine lamps.
