Abstract

994,313. Discharge lamps. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. May 2, 1962 [May 23, 1961], No. 16892/62. Heading H1D. A discharge lamp contains a non-metallic recombination surface. This is said to increase the operating voltage of the tube without impeding the free passage of the discharge along the envelope. The surface may be that of a rod, straight, or helical, or crenallated as 42d, Fig. 10, and of circular or cruciform section, or one or more axial or spiralling fins 55, 56, Fig. 13, extending from the tube wall as shown, or radially. The recombination surface, and the envelope walls, may be phosphor coated. The rod may be, e.g. glass, or a flexible cord, e.g. glass fibre, held longitudinally under tension, Fig. 3 (not shown); or the rod may contain a conductive strip, as a starting electrode, Fig. 17 (not shown). The recombination surface may be coated with a ultraviolet reflecting material. Two coaxial rods may extend from opposite ends of the envelope (Fig. 4, not shown).
