Abstract

442,267. Knitting- machines. HEMPHILL CO., 131, Clay Street, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, U.S.A. Aug. 9, 1935, No. 22499. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1934. [Class 74 (ii)] Yarn is fed to the needles 5 by one or more rotating elements 55, 56 driven at a surface speed at least equal to the greatest speed at which the yarn is required, the yarn being snubbed about the element so that when resistance is increased at the supply or at the needle side of the element, the yarn will snub more tightly and be fed faster and vice versa. In the multi-feed rotary needle cylinder machine shown each yarn 10 passes through a pair of slightly staggered eyes 11, 12 past a measuring wheel 18 and thence in figure-8 form round the two feeding elements 55, 56 which are connected by gearing 53, 52 and driven through bevel gearing 51, 50 and 47, 46 from a shaft 23 which also carries a friction wheel 22 for driving a disc 20. This disc 20 has equally spaced holes in its flange which with holes in the wheels 18 enable the relative speeds of the yarns to be judged. After leaving the elements 55, 56 the yarn may pass through a tensioning device 60. Specification 425,197 is referred to.
