[Class 17 (i)] Sole-laying.-In a twin sole-laying machine a single treadle controls both presses, partial depression of the treadle applying light clamping pressure to one press, mechanically, by a system of linkage, full depression applying full clamping pressure to the same press and releasing pressure in the other press, depression thereafter applying the light and full pressures to the other press, and so on alternately. A pair of press pads b are each provided with a pressure arm e carried by a lever f actuated by an arm f connected by a resilient link g with one end of a lever h the other end of which is linked each to one end of a cross bar k resiliently connected to a treadle l<1>. The treadle also actuates a clutch shifter n rise of which causes a cam i to rotate half a revolution, raising the operative end of the lever h to exert full pressure in the corresponding press. When one press is under full pressure the corresponding end of the bar k is locked, so that partial depression of the treadle depresses the other end only. In a modification, the bar k is actuated by a lever q, Fig. 5, having pin-and-slot connection with an arm p<2> partially encircling a driven shaft p and frictionally clamped thereto by a complementary member p<1> pivoted to the arm p<2> and to a thrust rod o resiliently connected to the treadle. The press pad d is adjustably supported on a plurality of springs r<1>, r<2>, which may be arranged in a triangle or rectangle.
