Index type-wheel machines; aligning for impression; platen-impression arrangements.-In sole-stamping and like machines adapted for use on pieces of sheet stock and having a stamp above and a pressure member below the work and in which predetermined stamping action is ensured despite variations in work thickness, the stamp consists of a number of relatively adjustable separate stamps and the pressure member is moved a variable distance to bring the work into contact with the stamp and is then given a predetermined stamping stroke. A special construction of stamp for the above type of machine is also described. A work table 24 is supported by springs 27 within a sleeve 26 slidably mounted in a vertical bearing 3 extending from the main frame of the machine. A pin 31, supported in opposite slots 30 in the sleeve 26, engages between an incline 32 of 15‹ on a cylindrical extension 25 of the table 24 and an incline 33 of 10‹ on a block 34 slidable within the sleeve. The block 34 carries a pin 35 passing through slots 36, 37 in the extension 25 and the sleeve 26 respectively. A hollow connecting-rod 38, connected at its upper end to the pin 35, slidably engages a block 39 on a crank pin 40 carried by a shaft 2 driven through a one-revolution clutch, a spring 41 inside the rod providing a resilient drive. In operation the pin 35 rises, the extension 25 is released, and the springs 27 press the table 24 upwards until the work makes contact with the stamp. The pin 31 is also pushed to the right and is finally clamped between the surfaces 33 and 32 whereby the sleeve 26, the block 34, and the part 25 are locked together. A roller 42 on the crank-pin 40 now engages the under-surface of the sleeve 26 and provides a stamping stroke determined by the setting of a pointed screw 28 engaging a coned aperture 29 in the sleeve. The stamp comprises type discs 8 mounted on a shaft 9 carried by a bracket 7 rotatable with respect to a bearing 5 and secured in either of two positions spaced at 180‹ apart bv a hand-wheel 19 so that the characters may be inverted, a projection 22 on the bracket entering an aperture 23 in each position. A removable stamp 11 may be fixed in line with the operative types 8. A toothed wheel 43, Fig. 2, slidable and rotatable on a shaft 44, is provided for adjusting the discs 8, spring- pressed pins 13 engaging notches 12 hold them in adjusted position. A pivoted hook 14 prevents lateral displacement, the hook itself being retained in position by a pin 16 engaging a groove in the shaft 9. An adjustable work gauge 46 may be provided.
