Abstract

[Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In an overhead-valve engine, a partition 3, which extends across the combustion chamber and has openings a', e<1>, corresponding to the inlet and exhaust valves a, e, is arranged at such a height with reference to the valve lift that substantially all the incoming charge is caused to flow over the head of the exhaust valve e and enter the cylinder by the opening e<1>. In a cylinder having a hemispherical head the effect is improved owing to the inclination of the exhaust valve. In a side-valve engine the partition is omitted and the combustion chamber is L-shaped in plan, Fig. 2, and arranged so that the charge flows over the exhaust valve head and enters the cylinder either tangentially, as shown, or radially. The exhaust valve may be at a lower level than the inlet valve and inclined to facilitate the flow of the charge.
