441,438. Piezo - - electric crystals. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London.-(Assignees of Baldwin, C. F. ; 100, Manheim Avenue, Oaklyn, and Bokovoy, S. A. ; 705B, Woodlynne Avenue, West Collingwood, both in New Jersey, U.S.A.) April 10, 1935, No. 11159. Convention date, April 21, 1934. [Class 40 (v)] A piezo-electric section is cut so that its electrode faces are askew with respect to the X, Y and Z axes of the mother crystal. This gives it a fundamental frequency which is high relative to its thickness, and a predetermined temperature - coefficient independent of the relation between thickness and diameter. Fig. 3 shows in plan a crystal section a out along a line f f making an angle w with a mechanical axis, whilst Fig. 4 shows the angle v made by the same section with the optic axis z z. Fig. 5 shows in perspective the manner in which one section 13 is cut from the natural crystal, leaving the parts b, c unused. Fig. 10 shows how, by suitable selection of the two angles v, w, it is possible to cut a crystal oscillator having either a zero or a positive or negative temperature-coefficient.
