[Class 69 (ii)] Hydraulic torque converters have their driving and driven members connected by centrifugally - operated members at a predetermined speed of one of the shafts. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, wedge blocks 80 connected by springs 81 and carried by the pump 1 are adapted to engage the shell of the turbine 3 when moved out. In a modification, the blocks are carried by the turbine. The blocks are guided so as to move at an angle to the radial direction, said angle being that of the angle of friction. The member 4 of the converter has a pawl-andratchet mounting so that it can rotate only in the same direction as the pump and turbine, leakage is collected in a bowl 92 and led to a reservoir, from which it is returned by a gear wheel pump 87, and the turbine is connected to a shaft 13 by means of mechanical gearing.
