[Class 8 (i)] [See also Group XXVII] An air compressor driven by an internalcombustion engine and co-operating with the engine to supply a mixture of scavenging air and exhaust gases at super-atmospheric pressure for use as a driving gas for other expansion motors has a main piston valve 13 controlling the intake passage 10 of the compressor to the suction chamber 5 and auxiliary spring-loaded valves 20 controlling direct communication between the atmosphere and the suction chamber. On starting of the unit, the main valve 13 is closed and valves 20 supply air at a pressure below atmosphere to the suction chamber 5 giving a higher ratio of compression than normal in the compressor cylinder 1 and as a consequence a higher temperature of the air supplied to the internal-combustion engine. This higher temperature at the start facilitates combustion of the fuel and the throttling of the compressor intake substantially unloads the compressor. The valve 13 is opened for normal operation and as the pressure in the suction chamber 5 approaches atmospheric the valves 20 cease to function.
