Abstract
440,677. Sliding-window holders &c. SLEIGH, H. L., CHESTON, A. S., and STUART, F. J., Widney Works, Bagot Street, Birmingham. Oct. 9, 1934, No. 28849. [Class 44] [See also Group X] In a vertically sliding window operated by a handle, which may also control pawl or other positive holding devices, operation of the handle to depress the window actuates means for applying braking action during downward movement of the window. Operation of the handle to raise the window may lessen braking action or render it inoperative. As shown, a plate spring 15 carried by the sliding window has a portion 15<a> bearing against the front inner face of the guide channel and a depending portion 15b normally clear of a rack member 10 mounted on the rear inner face of the channel. Part 15b is of greater depth than the width of the slots 11 in the rack member so that when moved into contact with said member it bridges the slots during upward movement of the window, to prevent noise in operation. The window also carries a plate spring 14 with a hooked end 16 normally engaging the lower edge of a slot 11 to hold the window, and with an off-set upstanding attachment 17. A similar arrangement is provided in the opposite guide channel. The top edge of the window carries a shaft 4 which is rocked by the operating handle, not shown, and has terminal arms 6 with cranked ends 7 located between the parts 15b, 17. When the operating handle is depressed, part 7 is moved to the left, withdrawing hook 16 and causing member 17 to bear against the part 15<a>, spring reaction causing the window to be pressed against the rear inner face of the guide channel to give braking action. When the handle is raised, part 7 moves to the right, causing part 15<b> to bear against the rack 10, and rocking the window bodily away from the rear face of the channel to release hook 16 and minimize friction during upward movement of the window. Parts 14, 15, 16 may be integrally formed as in Fig. 7.
