Class 28 (ii)] One side wall of the substance carrier is pivotally mounted and extends into the path swept by the substance pusher S. In Figs. 1A and 3 the side wall 14 remote from the operator of a push-pull gravity-feed machine is pivoted at 15 and frictionally held in the position shown by a screw 19 having a friction washer which engages a slotted bracket 20 on the free end of the wall 14. As the pusher advances the right-hand edge thereof, passing through an aperture 16 in the wall, engages a part 22 on the wall and pushes the wall back until it is parallel with the fixed wall 11. Fig. 4A shows part of a modification in which the wall 14 is urged outwards by a spring at the pivot and is normally locked against outward movement by the engagement of a rack 30 thereon with a catch 31 on a tumbler 32 pivoted at 32A; the advancing pusher strikes the tumbler, pushes it back against the action of a spring 34, and thus releases the wall for outward movement. In a third modification the wall is pressed inwards by a spring at the pivot and its end is entirely free, having an inwardly inclined portion which is pushed aside by the advancing pusher. The pusher is adapted to deal with a piece of substance longer than the carrier, in that it comprises two oppositelyfacing pusher plates 17, 18 pivoted on an arm 25 pivoted at 26 to the guide block 23 running on the edge 24 of the fixed plate 11. The guide block may be retracted to the upper end of the carrier, the pusher being then turned about the pivot 26 so that the rear plate 18 engages the substance.
