Abstract
Thermally and acoustically insulating building-slabs are made by pressing a mixture of seaweed in an undisintegrated or only moderately disintegrated state with a relatively small quantity of a binding-medium. In an example pressed seaweed is split, cleaned and combed, and if necessary dried. It is then mixed with a diluted rubber dispersion and, after further drying, pressed in a mould which is then exposed in a furnace at 100-140 DEG C. for several hours. The moulded block is cooled and cut into slabs. The rubber binder may be used in the dispersed or swelled state or in solutions; a concentrated latex is suitable. A bituminous emulsion or an aqueous solution of water-glass may alternatively be used as a binder, or a powdered or granular binding-medium such as dextrin may be used, moisture being supplied to the mixture before pressing. Filling materials such as cork meal or granular cork may be added to the seaweed; these may serve as a support for the binding-medium.
