Abstract
Vegetable fibrous material, e.g. wood wool, is thoroughly impregnated with a petrifying liquid, e.g. a solution of sodium silicate, and then mixed with Portland or other mineral cement. The mixture is placed in a mould having a removable pallet and a piston-like cover is pressed into and secured at a desired height in the mould by means of ratchet clips or by pegs inserted in coincident holes in the cover and mould walls. When consolidated but before initial setting of the cement, the slab is removed on the pallet and allowed to set. If straw is used instead of wood wool, it is crushed and immersed in hot petrifying liquid. The cover may be pressed into the mould in a press or by traversing the moulds individually between successive progressively closer horizontal rolls.
