Abstract

A plastic mass capable of being moulded to form lightweight building blocks &c. is made by suspending a hydraulic binding medium, e.g. Portland cement or plaster of Paris, in agar-agar solution and adding vegetable fillers in granular or fibrous form. The fillers may be treated with agar-agar solution before being added to the cement suspension. The formed material may be impregnated with tar, asphalt, &c. In an example, 10 kgs. of cement and 3 kgs. of water are heated with 5 gr. of agar-agar and added to a hot mixture of 20 gr. of agar-agar, 10 kgs. of cellulose and 4 kgs. of water. After being mixed the mass becomes thick and plastic and is cast in moulds.
