Abstract

Heat and sound insulating stone is made by moulding an aggregate of micro- or macro-porous siliceous material, e.g. of pumice, or diatomaceous earth, or produced by gas- or foam-expansion, or by drying gels, with a binder, e.g. slaked lime or Portland cement, and water, using a mould with small openings to allow passage of steam, the mortar being vibrated or lightly compressed to fill up any voids, and steamed after closing the mould and securing the walls against displacement. Sudden pressure changes and great expansion are thus pvoided, thereby reducing cracks &c. in the aroduct. The lid of the mould may be bolted down and may have a small clearance from the mould - sides. Known additives facilitating steam-curing and increasing the strength of the product may be used.
