Abstract

Asbestos-cement slate-like products are made by adding to a mixture of asbestos and Portland cement a sufficient quantity of finely divided siliceous material to bind the calcium hydroxide contained in the cement or liberated in hydration, shaping into plates, tubes, &c. and hardening by steam under pressure. Suitable siliceous materials are quartz, quartzite, sandstone, sand, kieselguhr, granite, slags, and artificial or natural puzzuolana. In an example, a binder comprises 20-30 parts by weight of Portland cement and 80-70 parts of puzzuolana. The asbestos-cement composition comprises 80-85 parts of this binder and 20-15 parts of asbestos. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of lime, slag cement, puzzuolana cements, natural cements, and the like instead of Portland cement. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
