Abstract

438,664. Materials for making coke; agglomerating fuel. SPATZ, R., and SENNAC, R., 10, CitÚ Condorcet, Paris. May 18, 1934, No. 14973. Convention date, May 18, 1933. [Classes 50 and 55 (ii)] Wood is heated to 280-300‹ C. in a retort, an exothermic reaction then raising the temperature to 400‹ C., and methyl alcohol, acetic acid, and possibly pyroligneous acid being evolved. The retort is then isolated from the condensing system and the temperature rapidly raised to 600‹ C. The mass which retains hydrocarbons is slowly cooled in the retort and then pulverized and kneaded with all the condensation products. Blocks formed by compression are heated up to about 1000‹ C., and by-products such as methyl alcohol and acetic acid are recovered. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the mixing of the product of the first heating with the distillates and with mineral or vegetable tars or oils, so as to obtain a granular mixture, and the second heating may be dispensed with if up to 5 per cent of coal powders and agglutinants such as by-products of carbonization or chemicals such as magnesia or carbonates are added. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
