Abstract

Hydraulic binding-materials are made by mixing, as by grinding, solid watersoluble silicates with materials of a schist-like nature which on subdivision split into flake form. The said materials may be shale, argillite, clay stones, prophyroides, streaked porphyre, porphyre schist, crystalline schist, micacious schist, talc schist, chlorite schist, horn blend schist, serpentine schist, or gneiss stone. To the mixture may be added acids, e.g. humic or phthalic acid or anhydride (about 1 per cent), blast-furnace or iron cement clinkers (up to 10 per cent), lead silicate, and quartz. In an example "a starting material" free from or poor in lime is ground in a ball mill with 15 per cent of waterglass having a 1 : 4 Na2O:SiO2 ratio and 1 per cent of humic acid in the form of pulverized brown coal, until only 5 per cent of the mixture is retained on a sieve having 5000 meshes per sq. cm. The hydraulic binding material so obtained is then mixed with quartz in a 1 : 3 proportion to give a water-tight and acid-resistant constructional material.
