[Class 38 (ii)] The grid control potential for a discharge device is obtained by distorting an alternating grid potential during its negative half cycle by valve action of the grid, this distortion being varied to obtain regulation. When an anode (e.g. the anode associated with grid g1) is conductive the condenser C1 is short circuited due to grid current flowing. When conduction ceases the condenser first charges from the grid transformer t1 through the resistance R1 applying a negative bias to the grid and then commences to discharge, the period of charge and discharge being determined by the size of condenser and value of the resistance R1. Since the anode cannot conduct until the potential on the condenser falls approximately to zero, the moment of ignition can be varied by adjustment of the resistance condenser combination. In a modification a common resistance in the connection between the centre tap of the grid transformer and the cathode is used. To obtain protection against short circuit a resistance, normally short circuited, is switched into the grid circuit.
