Abstract

398,498. Converting. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Bivens, M. E. ; 17, Glen Avenue, Scotia, New York, U.S.A.) Jan. 11, 1932, No. 793. Convention date, Jan. 9, 1931. [Class 38 (ii).] In a series-type inverter having discontinuous control valves 13, 18, the grid circuits of which each include one of the secondary windings of a grid transformer 21, unilaterally conducting devices 26 are connected in parallel with these windings and means are provided for applying a negative bias to the control grid of the non-conducting valve while the other is conducting current so that abnormal conditions in the circuit supplying the transformer 21 do not cause both valves to conduct simultaneously and short circuit the D.C. supply 10. The valves 13, 18 are of the type which commence to conduct current when the grid is slightly negative. The grid circuit of each valve includes also a unilaterally conducting device 23 and the secondary 24 of a transformer 25 the primary of which is connected in the A.C. output circuit. Positive half-waves of potential in the winding 20 are short circuited by means of a unilaterally conducting device 26, a resistance 27 restricting the current. During the period when the valve 13 is conducting, the potential induced in the winding 24 is in such a direction that the unilaterally conducting device 23 is non-conducting. Hence the total p.d. between the cathode and grid is approximately zero. At the same time the potential in the winding 34 is in such a direction that the device 33 is conducting and current flows through a resistance 36, thus introducing into the grid circuit of valve 18 a large negative biassing potential, which is effective to maintain this valve non-conducting while the valve 13 is conducting current. If the valves are of the type that require a small positive bias on the grid to initiate conduction, a small resistance is inserted in series with the device 26 in each grid circuit. Specification 347,474 is referred to.
