[Class 38 (ii)] In a converting arrangement having an interrupter 2 in series with an inductance 1 the interrupter is shunted by a condenser 4 in series with a resistance 5. In the form shown, the inductance is formed by the primary winding of a transformer to which the load is connected. The values of resistance and inductance are such that the time of charging of the condenser is approximately equal to the time of break of the interrupter and is also such that a phase displacement of approximately 90‹ is produced. In a modification, the inductance in circuit is in two parts, the interrupter being connected between these parts, and the load connected acorss the interrupter. A motor for driving the interrupter comprises a field in series with the interrupter and a Z-shaped soft iron rotor. With this arrangement the field winding forms one of the inductances. In a frequency changing arrangement a synchronous motor drives a subdivided interrupter.
