Abstract

436,266. Batteries. EXPANDED METAL CO., Ltd., and SALMON, H. P., Burwood House, Caxton Street, Westminster. Jan. 19, 1935, Nos. 1858 and 6298. [Class 53] An accumulator electrode in the form of a box filled with active material, as shown in plan in Fig. 5, is made of expanded or partly expanded metal and may be made by bending a sheet of the metal into shape and welding the free edges together. The box may be strengthened by an internal zig-zag member Z of expanded metal which may be welded at points Q to the sides of the box. The box and the member Z may be made from a single piece of expanded metal which may be provided with solid edges to form a solid bottom or other solid parts, such as connecting lugs in the completed electrode. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which a sheet of expanded metal S of small mesh is first doubled upon itself and a sheet T of larger mesh then interposed between the two portions of the sheet S. The free edges J of the sheets are then burned together and a bottom to the structure is formed by burning together the bottom unexpanded edges of the outer folded sheet S.
