Abstract

190,765. Exley, W. H., Handasyde, G. H., and Rawlence, L. C. Sept. 2, 1921. Electrodes; separators.-A storage cell is provided with electrodes a consisting as shown in plan in Fig. 2 of a number of pasted metal grids having their edges opposite to the adjacent electrodes b. All the grids of each electrode are spaced apart but are burnt or welded together at a number of points to form a rigid unit. The lower edges of the grids may be burnt across the whole width and length of the electrode and the sides may be burnt to produce horizontal strips running across the electrode. The grids may also be joined diagonally by burning. In order to provide sufficient metaL for the burning or welding, narrow lead strips may be inserted between adjacent grids, these strips being then burnt to the grids, or the frames of the grids may be made with spacing projections which are burnt together. Separators m are placed between the electrodes, or the electrodes may be wrapped in glass, wool, asbestos &c. or they may be completely enclosed in wood veneer, perforated rubber of celluloid or rubber rendered porous by porous threads embedded in it during manufacture. Fig. 9 shows in plan a portion of a cell having cylindrical electrodes each consisting of a number of grids o, p burnt to collector bars q, r and having their frames burnt together at the bottom and sides. Fig. 10 shows a cylindrical cell in which the electrodes o, p are. arranged side by side and separated by members u. Positive electrodes constructed as above may be used in a cell having negative electrodes of any suitable type.
