Abstract

177,198. Leitner, H. Nov. 16, 1920. Electrodes; separators.-A storage battery is provided with electrodes in the form of pencils which are situated in receptacles or grooves formed by ribs on one or both sides of porous or perforated separators. The electrodes consist as shown in plan in Fig. 3 of a lead conductor b surrounded with active material a. The separators c are of treated porous wood, or perforated celluloid, ebonite &c. and are formed with ribs e on one or both sides. The pencils have rounded edges to leave spaces f for the electrolyte. Spaces g are also left between some of the separators. The whole is enclosed in a casing d. In another form the separators are provided with ribs on one side only which abut against the plain surfaces of adjacent separators. In another form a single ribbed separator is employed, the open faces of the grooves being closed by a thin wood veneer. A further modification consists of a single separator having ribs on both sides, the open faces of the grooves being closed by the outer container. Electrodes in adjacent grooves may have a common lead core which passes over the top of the separator from one pencil to the other. A complete battery is also described having an outer container divided by a partition into two cells which are joined in series. The separators are provided with ribs on one face only, the ribs on adjacent separators being turned towards one another to form grooves for the pencils. The lead cores of the pencils may be formed with projections which pass through the active material to keep it out of contact with the separators. Electrodes in adjacent grooves are preferably of opposite polarity.
