Abstract
177,479. Leitner, H. Nov. 16, 1920. Separators.-A storage battery is provided as shown in plan in Fig. 1 with electrodes in the form of pencils which are situated in holes in a block of porous wood c. Each electrode consists of a lead core b surrounded by active material a, and may be of square shape fitting within a circular hole in the wood block to provide channels for the electrolyte. Additonal spaces for the electrolyte may also be provided by saw-cuts e in the block. One of the Provisional Specifications states that the system may be built up of recessed strips of porous wood, which may also be perforated, enclosing or gripping partly or wholly the positive and negative pencils, the combination being held in place by the cell container or several of these being inter-connected and held in place by the container. In the case of small cylindrical containers a single pair of recessed separators forming receptacles for two pencils may be used. In large containers the receptacle forming separators in pairs mav be arranged radially and inter-connected for mutual support or fixed to the container.
