Abstract
312,828. Shimidzu, H. June 19, 1928. -A dry cell comprises zinc and carbon electrodes separated by depolarizer and electrolyte, the whole being enclosed in a vulcanized rubber container which maintains the contents in compression. Fig. 1A shows a rectangular rubber cell containing electrodes 2,$and depolarizer 4, the latter being separated from the zinc electrode 6 by a layer of pulp 5. Fig. 1B shows a cylindrical cell in which the zinc electrode consists of two semi-cylindrical parts 6 separated from the depolarizer 4 by a fibre layer 5. In a modification zinc electrodes are placed on each side of a central carbon electrode. Fig. 2B shows a number of cells enclosed in an outer case and joined in series by brass clips 12 which engage the terminals of adjacent cells. A number of such batteries may be arranged on shelves and joined in series to form a high tension battery. In making up the cells the electrolyte is added last and a number of cells are placed in a receptacle and subjected to pressure to remove excess electrolyte.
