[Class 80 (i)] [See also Group XXXI] In a driving unit for an air-screw propelled rail car, transmission gearing connecting the hollow shaft 2 of an electric motor 1 with a coaxial air-screw shaft 8 comprises four pairs of interconnected pinion wheels 11, 11<a> meshing with spur wheels 10, 12 fast on the motor and air-screw shafts respectively. In order to equalize the transmission between the pairs of pinions, and damp out torsional oscillations due to side winds on the airscrew, each pinion wheel 11 incorporates a slipping friction coupling comprising interengaging friction discs 27, 28, Fig. 3, alternately secured to the pinion and its shaft.
