Abstract

Azo dyes containing metal are made by first treating 8-hydroxyquinoline or its derivatives with an agent supplying heavy metal and combining the resulting product with a diazo compound free from groups capable of forming complex metal compounds, the components being so chosen that the resulting dyestuffs contain at least one acid group. In examples: (1) the chromium compound obtained by boiling a hydrochloric acid solution of 8-hydroxyquinoline with chromium formate, fluoride, acetate or sulphate is coupled with diazotized metanilic acid in alkaline solution; the dyestuff has the same properties as that obtained according to example 1 of the parent Specification; the compound from 8-hydroxyquinoline and ferric acetate may be similarly coupled; the products are suitable for dyeing leather; (2) the chromium compound obtained by boiling a neutral solution of 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid with chromium formate is coupled with diazotized p-nitraniline in acetic acid solution; the product dyes wool in the same way as the dyestuff obtained according to example 8 of the parent Specification. Other coupling components specified are 2- or 5-methyl- or 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinoline.
