Abstract

Azo dyes are made by coupling diazotized 3 - halogen - 5 - nitro - 2 - aminophenols with N-hydroxyalkylated derivatives of m-toluidine which contain an alkyl or a further hydroxyalkyl group on the nitrogen atom. They yield blue shades on cellulose esters and may be used for colouring resin and nitrocellulose lacquers. In examples, dyes from the following components are specified: 3-bromo-or 3-chloro-5-nitro-2-aminophenol (made by bromination and chlorination respectively of 5-nitro-2-aminophenol in glacial acetic acid); dihydroxyethyl-m-toluidine and N-hydroxy-ethyl-n-butyl-m-toluidine.
