Abstract

434,054. Lubricating vertical-shaft bearings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Oct. 5, 1934, No. 28584. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1933. [Classes 12 (i) and 12 (ii)] A vertical rotatable shaft 11 has upper and lower bearings 13, 12, surrounded by lubricant compartments 34, 18, respectively. Pumping action at the lower bearing delivers oil through a conduit 31 to the upper bearing, oil being returned from the compartment 34 to the compartment 18 bv a conduit 42. The conduits 31, 42, are arranged exteriorly of the shaft 11. As shown, for the shaft 11 of a dynamo-electric machine, the lower bearing sleeve 20 has a part-circumferential groove 27 with an oil inlet hole 28 leading to the oil compartment 18 and an outlet duct 30 connected to the tube 31. A sleeve 25 fixed to the shaft 11 runs in the sleeve 20, the direction of rotation being such that oil enters the bearing through the hole 28 and leaves it through the duct 30.
