Abstract
435,835. Lubricating cylindricaljournal bearings. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Nov. 14, 1934, No. 32799. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1933. [Classes 12 (i), 12 (ii), and 12 (iii)] A horizontal suction bearing comprises a shell 10 provided with a liner 11 to which lubricant is supplied by conduits 18 entering axial grooves 20 situated at the point of greatest suction, i.e. about 25‹ below the horizontal. In the form shown, the liner 11 is formed with discharge grooves 21, also at about 25‹ below the horizontal, communicating with conduits 19 to allow for bi-directional rotation of the shaft. For unidirectional rotation, the discharge grooves are arranged slightly above the horizontal to minimize foaming. The conduits 18, 19 are screwed into the shell and liner and welded at 25. Leakage along the shaft is prevented by annular endgrooves with return passages. The bearing is supported on a crossbar of a pedestal containing the lubricating oil. The bearing is preferably split, the edge of the upper portion being cut away at 29 to avoid scraping.
