SHAFT BEARING,
misses.
Specification of Letterslatent. Patented June 6, 1922 Application filed August 9, 1920. Serial No. 402,254.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. DAKE, a citizen of the "United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shaft Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a bearing and means for mounting it, and particularly to such a bearing as is intended to be used in connection with the shaft of a turbo generator and to be arranged so that it can be thoroughly lubricated. The parts are illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure l is an axial section through the bearing and lubricating chamber; Figure 2 is a section taken on lines 22 of Figure l. A is the main body of "the shaft, B a
hollow portion thereof, and C are two diaphragms in the casing D which serve to form the oil chamber E having an oil well F These diaphragms "are apertured respectively at C and O and in the diaphragmfC is a pocket G" into which is re1a Within the ring is the bearing G in which is rotatably mounted the hollou portion B of the shaft.
J is an oil distributor device not formin a part of this invention; On each side of the bearing within the ring are the spaces KK through which oil may pass on its way to or from the hearing. The right hand space K opens into the oil chamber E and the left hand space K opens into the passageway L formed in the hub-like part of the diaphragm C in connection with the pocket C A passage L leads thence to the oil chamber and oil well. M are the governor weights and N the governor rod, but these devices form no part of the present invention. The ring Ur preferably extends into the oil chamber E and on the walls of the oil chamber is a channel 0 formed by the ribs PP. This directs the oil down the side of the diaphragm into the space between the ring and the hub on the dia phragm and also when it overflows from the ring into the bearing.
The particular form, size and proportions of the several parts can of course be greatly varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows:
With the device so arranged, when the The oil alsofinds its way into thebearing and through its several parts. All such oil is carried '01 travelslaterally along the length of the shaft into the chamber or pas- L and L and thence back into the oil well.
The tendency of the oil to find its way into the space between the ring and the diaphragm hub is aided by the ribs in the side ofthe diaphragm, which tends todirect "the oil, which is probably on the diaphragm, to such ring.
I claim:
1. A casing having an oil chamber therein with a laterally projecting pocket in'the side thereof, in combination with a shaft which passes through the chamber and pocket, and a shaft bearing comprising a ring loosely fitted in the pocket and a bearing between the ring and the shaft.
2. Ar casing havingan oilchamber therein with a laterally projecting pocket in the side thereof, in combination with a shaft which passes through the chamber and pocket, and a shaft bearing comprising a ring loosely fitted in the pocket and a bearing between the ring and the 'shaft, said ring projecting into the oil chamber.
