and Machinery Corporaa corporation of Delaware Application September 15, 19 45, Serial No. 618,549
This invention relates to steam turbines, and more particularly to a novel type of drive for driving an oil pump to provide forced feed lubrication for steam turbines.
An object of the present invention is to provide a drive mechanism for driving a forced feed lubrication pump which may be employed in connection with steam turbines of some sizes. such as single stage turbines, without requiring extensive changes in the turbine parts, changes in its shaft, or causing an increase in the overall length of the turbine.
More specifically, the present invention comprehends the use of the governor disc of the governor of a steam turbine as the driving element from which power is taken to drive the lubricating pump.
With these and other objects in view, as may appear from the accompanying specification, the
invention consists of various features of construction and combination of parts, which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawings, showing an oil pump drive for steam turbine of a preferred form embodying the invention, and the features forming the invention will be specifically pointed outv in the claims.
"In the drawings: v
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section of the improved oil pump drive for turbines and taken on the line l--I of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross section through the oil pump drive 111 and taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I indicates a steam turbine of any approved construction which includes a governor mechanism generically indicated at 2 which controls the speed of operation of the turbine in the usual manner. The governor mechanism includes the usual type of disc 3 which is rotated .by the main type impellers, e. g., the impeller it is mounted on the main drive shaft 8 and meshes with the impeller ii for pumping the lubricating oil from the oil reservoir I! through the pump 9 and the 5 usual required piping mechanism It to the various bearings (not shown) of the turbine. A suitable drain pipe 15 is providedfor returning the oil to the oil reservoir l2.
If conditions require, or if it isso desired, an -i intermediate or idler gear may be interposed between the gear teeth'on the perimeter of the governor disc 3 and the pinion t.
It will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific construction or arrangement of parts shown, but that they may be widely modified within the invention defined by the claims. 7
What is claimed is: r
1. The combination with a steam turbine asgo sembly including a governor embodying a governor disc, of a lubricating oil pump, said governor disc having a spiral gear out upon its perimeter, and a spiral gear meshing with said governor disc carried spiral gear and connected 2; to said oil pump for driving the oil pump by retation of the governor disc.
2. The combination with a steam turbine assembly including a governor embodying a governor disc, of a lubricating oil pump, said governor disc having a spiral gear out upon its perimeter, a driven shaft for said oil pump, a spiral gear on said drive shaft and meshing with the spiral gear on the perimeter of the governor disc for driving the oil pump by rotation of the governor disc.
