Abstract

433,005. Sterilization of liquids by electrical treatment. FEREMUTSCH, P., 23, Moosstrasse, and VIELI, O., 4, Physikstrasse, both in Zurich, Switzerland. July 24, 1934, No. 21621. Convention date, July 24, 1933. [Class 41] Milk or other liquid is sterilized by passage in a thin film between electrodes of oligodynamic metal such as silver or copper, one of the electrodes being rotated or otherwise moved to promote stirring of the liquid. In the apparatus shown, milk saturated with carbon dioxide under pressure enters the cell at 23 and passes between a conical electrode 2 mounted on a shaft 7 and an electrode 1 constituting the inner lining of an insulating casing 8 the milk leaving the cell at 24. The electrode 1 is connected through an endplate 5 to a terminal 3 and the electrode 1 through an end-plate 6 and the shaft 7 to a terminal 4. The electrode-gap is adjustable by a screw-cap 18 mounted in a groove on the shaft 7 and engaging an extension 16 of the casing. The electrodes may be covered with thin sheets 28 of microporous nickel or other metal to retain slime detached therefrom. The electrodes may be provided with interlocking annular corrugations or flanges. They may be made from a sintered mixture of metallic powders. In modifications, the electrodes may consist of reciprocating plates or rotating discs, or a set of more than two coaxial electrodes may be provided. A periodically reversing direct current is preferably employed, the period between reversals being less than that taken for the metallic ion to pass from one electrode to the other.
