Abstract

383,508. Generating high-frequency oscillations. KASSNER, E. E. W., 35A, D³sseldorferstrasse, Berlin. March 8, 1932, No. 6911. Convention date, March 9, 1931. [Class 40 (v).] High-frequency currents from a Tesla coil are applied to the electrodes 3, Fig. 1, of a gas-filled tube 4, the anode 5 of the discharge-tube being associated with a series of spherical dipoles 10, 11, Fig. 2, fitted with rod radiators. When the apparatus is applied to the body of a patient, the discharge circuit is closed and short-wave radiation is produced. The electrodes 10, 11 fit into holes in glass plates 12, 13 and are separated by a liquid or powdered dielectric 24, such as magnesium oxide, to prevent arcing. The upper electrodes 11 are capacitatively coupled together by a perforated metal plate 14, whilst the lower electrodes are similarly coupled by a plate 15. The plates 14, 15 form an adjustable condenser system which may be " tuned " to the frequency of the dipoles radiators by varying the gap distance by rotating the screwed ring 17. The resulting radiation is stated to have a wavelength of the order 0.5 mm., and is concentrated on the person or substance to be treated by a reflector 18. The discharge tube 4, Fig. 1, 1s insulated from the operating handle 8 of the device by a highly evacuated tube 7, fitted with a guard-disc 9. The dipoles 10, 11 may be replaced by tubes 20, Fig. 3, fitted with a mixture 26 of powdered metal and magnesium oxide, or with a small quantity 23 of mercury in thick oil or magnesium oxide.
