Abstract

9567. Dawe, P. H. April 17. L i q u i d s, treating; electrodes.-Liquids are sterilized by passage of current, preferably alternating, between electrodes arranged in a chamber through which the liquids pass, so as to restrict the area of the current zone and to produce a high and uniform current density. In one arrangement, shown in Fig. 1, the electrodes b are of channel shape and are mounted in recesses in a rectangular insulating-chamber a, so as to prevent sparking. Concentric electrodes may be mounted in a similar way in a circular chamber, which, in the modification shown in Fig. 7, has one sloping electrode i mounted in a chamber j, which communicates with the main chamber by means of a narrow passage a<4>. This arrangement may also be used with rectangular electrodes. The apparatus may be connected in the secondary circuit r of a transformer, the primary q of which, as shown in Fig. 10, may be connected in series with the secondary p of the main transformer and with a resistance consisting of electrodes m, n mounted in a tank l, through which the liquid passes, so that the current is regulated automatically by the flow of liquid. Particulars of current density for sterilizing milk are given.
