Abstract

105,641. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Burgess Laboratories, C. F.). May 4, 1916. Liquids, treating; hypochlorites, obtaining; electrodes; electrolytes, treating non-chemically.- Water and other potable liquids are sterilized by the introduction therein of an electrolytic cell containing an electrolyte between its electrodes so that the nascent products of the electrolyzing action can diffuse into and sterilize the surrounding liquid. In the small pocket-apparatus shown in Fig. 1, a ring of bibulous material such as filter paper, asbestos, cloth, gelatin, &c. carrying a salt, such as sodium chloride, is enclosed between annular electrodes 10, 11 carried by a non-conducting rod 8 and connected respectively to a conducting- wire 9 and a conducting-tube 7 connected to a pocket battery 2 of dry cells. The cathode 11 is carried by a rod 12 adjustably clipped to the rod 8. In the form shown in Fig. 3, a disk 22 of bibulous material is gripped between flat electrodes 14, 20, the latter comprising preferably a platinum disk supported by a glass disk 19.
