Abstract
432,623. Thermionic valves. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP MACHINERIEEN-EN APPARATEN FABRIEKEN MEAF, (formerly NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP MACHINERIEEN-EN APPARATEN FABRIEKEN), 30, Croeselaan, Utrecht, Holland. Dec. 1, 1934, No. 34583. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1933. [Class 39 (i)] A valve, particularly for short-wave use, has an electrode arrangement consisting of four hyperbolic cylinders having their vertex lines parallel to a common axis and spaced apart by 90‹ about this axis, and one opposing pair is given a positive potential whilst the other is given a negative potential, these potentials being proportional to the square of the distances of the vertex lines from the axis. The arrangement produces a paraboliform field in which the electrons oscillate without damping. The electrodes may be such that any cross-section perpendicular to the axis is a pair of congruent equilateral hyperbolas. In one form, Fig. 3, the electrodes are hyperbolic cylinders 22, 23, 24, 25 of which the pair 22, 23 are connected to the plate 21 carrying the cylinders, the pair 24, 25 being insulated therefrom. Hot wire cathodes 26, 27 are mounted in grooves in the ends of the vertex lines of the cylinders 22, 23 and the cylinders 24, 25 are given a high positive voltage. A horse-shoe magnet 32 is provided to concentrate the beam of electrons in the plane joining the vertex lines of cylinders 22, 23, and has limbs 33 housed in the troughs of these cylinders and a yoke 34 behind the plate 21. A dipole aerial 36 is connected by an energy line 35 to the cylinders 22, 23. In a modification an electromagnet is used having a winding on the yoke, and polepieces of ferro-magnetic material covered at their surfaces in which hot-wire oxide cathodes are mounted with copper, silver or gold. The free ends of the polepieces are coupled with an aerial outside the tube and the polepieces may be given a weakly negative voltage relative to the hotwire cathodes, which may be hairpin-shaped and may be provided with an insulating member between their limbs.
