[Class 72] The electromagnet a of a drum separator having end flanges b is enclosed in a dust-tight cover or shell c of brass or other non-magnetic material and a steel or iron shell d of substantial thickness fits over the shell c and is secured to the flanges b by screws e, the shell c providing in effect an air gap between the poles and the shell d. The shell d may be built up from a number of sections each of which is separately detachable and in a drum of considerable length, the shell may be supported intermediate the end flanges by one or more spiders.
